England take on Spain in the Euro 2024 final tonight - and some stores and supermarkets will be changing their opening hours so staff can make the most of the match.
Kick-off is at 8pm and millions of fans across the country will be watching the big game in the hope that the Three Lions can win their first major tournament since 1966. Several supermarket chains and high street shops have announced that they will be changing their opening hours today and tomorrow to allow workers to join in the fanfare, reports the Mirror.
Lidl
Lidl said its stores in England will open one hour later, but as opening times do vary across the country, you should check the Lidl online tool to see the exact times for your local store. The majority of Lidl stores open at 8am on Mondays, which means they wouldn't open until 9am after the England match. Scotland and Wales stores will open as normal and regular hours for England stores will resume the following day on Tuesday (July 16).
Tesco
Tesco will be closing its Express stores in England early on Sunday. The supermarket chain - which has over 1,800 Express stores - will be closing at 7:30pm instead of the usual 10pm or 11pm to allow employees to watch the final.
Tesco said workers would be paid their normal working hours for the shift meaning they will not lose out on the store closing early. Employees who won't be watching the match will be also paid as normal. Tesco Express stores will open in the morning as normal on Sunday, so Brits can stock up on any essential pre-match supplies.
Because the match falls on a Sunday, the retailer's larger stores in England will already be closed by the time the match kicks off. All stores would then reopen as normal on Monday morning, with the majority from 6am or 7am. Tesco confirmed that all online orders already placed for Sunday evening would be honoured and delivered as normal. Stores in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland would continue to remain open in line with their usual hours.
Poundland
All Poundland stores will be open under their normal opening hours on Match Day on Sunday. However, on Monday, all of its over 600 English stores will be opening 30 minutes later than normal. So if your local Poundland opens at 8am then it will be opening at 8:30am instead. Poundland says the move was made so its workers could "fully enjoy the Euro final on Sunday night".
Sainsbury's
Sainsbury's will be closing its convenience stores and petrol filling stations early across England this Sunday. Over 1,000 Sinabury's Local stores will be closing earlier at 7:30pm instead of their usual time of betweeen 10pm or 11pm. Like Tesco, all these stores will be opening at their normal time on Sunday morning. Sainsbury's larger supermarket stores will not be affected as they usually close ahead of the 8pm kick-off. Any groceries online orders which have already been booked for after this time will be honoured. All branches will reopen at their usual time on Monday.
